You slowly walk towards it. You step onto one of the statues. It's like stepping onto a normal statue laying on the ground. Walking on the statues is like walking across large rocks. When you get about ten feet from the remaining statue, you stop. It could easily wrench a spear from one of the fallen statues and throw it at you. You are ready to run for it if necessary. You want to find out if it's possible for these creatures to speak. You call out, "...um...hello!...I'm John!..." No response. You feel stupid. "...um..why you try to kill me?..."
"Wherefore thou trespass?"
It's voice is deep, and despite your attempt, you're very surprised that it can in fact speak.
"I'm just passing through. Don't mind me."
"Art thou sorcerer?"
"Uh no...I'm no threat to anyone..."
"Thou hath composure mortal."
"You're mortal also." "Nay, life without life, hence death without death."
"What actually are you?"
"Dost thou knowest tale of Cadmus?"
"No, I don't"
"He art the father. He who planted the seeds of tomorrow. Hundred and four and twenty summers past. The seeds of myself and brothers. He who tilled the soil and sown the dragon's teeth from which we art born."
You try to make sense of what he's saying. "So wait, it's like what, some guy called Cadmus buried dragon's teeth in the ground, and you and the others grew out of the ground like plants?"
"Verily, the teeth Cadmus taketh as payment for labors across the sea. We the forsaken."
"Are you here to guard something?"
"Me knowest not."
"You just stand here forever not knowing why?"
"Nay, me return unto that which bore me. Tingrene."
"Who is Tingrene?"
"Tis the fatherland, the city founded by the father."
"Tingrene is a place? The father is Cadmus, right?"
"Thou hast relieved me of my charge. I leave forthwith".
"Why you leave now just because I'm here? Why were you here in the first place?"
"Twas charge with the defense of the land and ourselves."
"The person who put you here ordered you to attack any one who trespasses or attacks you, not thinking it would be yourselves."
"I've discharged my duty."
"Now that you threw your spear at me, you're free to go?"
The statue turns from you and faces south. It slowly moves it's right leg forward without bending the knee, and then shifts its weight to its right foot. Then it moves its left leg forward and shifts its weight to its left foot. In this jerking manner, it haltingly walks forward.
"Wait!" you call out, but it no longer acknowledges you. The statue, or whatever it is, continues walking in a mechanical manner over its fallen comrades. If there are actual people nearby, they might know something about what you're looking for, or something helpful to your quest. Also, you feel hungry, and they must have food. Then again, you don't know if they are friendly. Also, you don't want to get sidetracked. The statue is walking south, and you're supposed to walk east. Do you follow the statue or keep going east?
