This is the Crab Nebula which is 6000 light years away. It is the result of a supernovae which was witnessed on Earth on July 4, 1054. The supernovae was actually recorded by the Anasazi in New Mexico. It's portrayed in a rock painting on the lower face of an overhanging ledge in the badlands of New Mexico. It was also recorded by the Chinese. The nebula was discovered by Charles Messier in 1758 while looking for comets. When it didn't move, he started a catalog of "things not to be mistaken for comets". Thus the Crab Nebula is honored with the designation "M1". At it's center is a neutron star which rotates about 30 times a second.
My name is on a CD-ROM on board the Pathfinder probe on Mars.
I am the (great)30 grandson of William the Conqueror (1027 - 1087) who in 1066 became the last person to successfully invade Britain. Here you can read about how I used the internet to do genealogy.
